Ice Caves

These 4 photos were taken during the spring of 1986 when we had a few VIP's visit Alert. This 1st pic is looking back down the ravine. The person on the right is the OpsO, Capt Richard Gervais, center is the visiting Gen and on the left another of the VIP's and for the life of me I cannot remember either of their names.

This photo, I turned around and took the pic of the entrance to the cave further up the ravine. It is much the same as the previous set of pics where Irv Finkleman is standing in front of the entrance. Note how clean the entrance looks in this pic. The other set of pics were taken during the summer after the winds have had a chance to blow some dust onto the scene! Also note in this photo how the snow/ice has covered the entire ravine over who knows how many years.

This photo is from inside the cave looking towards the entrance. Those walls are as slippery as they look, solid ice, and there are some awesome colors there as well even though they don't show up in the photo.

This photo was taken on the way up the ravine to the ice cave. The cave is at the very end of the ravine. I took it to show the rock formations found in the area. That stuff is sharp, just in case you were wondering!! That rock is one reason we chose to walk up the ravine rather than come down over the top.
