Ice Field

One of the unique icebergs that can be found near Alert. This photo courtesy Derek Bywater circa Spring 2003.

The next 2 photos serve to illustrate the changing ice conditions of the Arctic Ocean from year to year. Both photos were taken from Cape Belknap off the north end of the airstrip looking northerly. The top photo was taken at approximately 0200 hours during the spring of 1967. The 2nd was taken in the spring of 1989. Of note of course is the constrast in ice conditions where in 1967 there were some very large icebergs in the near vicinity of Alert, in fact just offshore from the runway.

This photo of an iceberg was taken by Bill Dyke, summer of 1976, just offshore in the Arctic Ocean very near Alert.
