Back to the History of Alert Alert Wireless Station came into being in September of 1958 after the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS) took over responsiblity for the unit. During the summer of 1958, 5 more GP Huts were constructed to accomodate the expanding Station. As well the Mess/Kitchen facilites were extended. The original building had another hut built just to the east of it and it was joined in the middle, forming an "H". This extra space was a much needed. It now meant that the kitchen and the dining areas would be separated from the Mess and recreation area. There was lots more space for the infrequent movies and CBC tapes of hockey games to be shown as well as the ping pong table and shuffle board. This photo at the right shows construction of the second row of GP Huts almost complete. Note that there are only 5 buildings in this row, with a space mid row. However there is new construction in the original row. This was the expansion of the Mess/Kitchen facilites. It can be seen at the far end of the 1st row of buildings.
This photo at the left shows construction of the second row of GP Huts almost complete. Note the new construction at the far left. This was the new kitchen facility. This kitchen/dining hall was the first building in the new row which would eventually have living quarters as well as the Senior Staff Mess. The curling ring and gym were also built in this row.
