Intarsia is an ancient form of wood art dating back at least to the 13th century. It is a mosaic of wood - several pieces, or many pieces, all cut to fit and sanded and attached to a wooden backing in order to form a picture.
During recent years, Judy Gale Roberts has revived this art form with her wonderfully detailed patterns.
Through the use of Ms Roberts' patterns I have fabricated many of her designs into beautiful works of Intarsia. All projects are cut almost entirely from Western Red Cedar, a wood of many colors. Each piece in the project is then sanded so as to give the project "life" and dimension. Then, 2-3 coats of "Old Masters" Gel Varnish, a polyurethane satin finish, are applied. The pieces are then glued to an MDF/plywood backing.
